USEFUL
TOOL LINKS -- here are a few sites that can give you in minutes what used to
require hours and days in a Library Reference Room. If you haven't
tried every one of these sites at least a couple times, you really
don't know what you are missing.
www.google.com
This
is the search engine, e.g. type in "dog
obedience PWD" or whatever you like and you'll be rewarded with lots of
links. Click on the links (sometimes the best ones are on page 2 or 3). It's like having your own
librarian at the Internet Library reference desk. Google was so popular,
that when google went public (in August 2004),
almost half of their 2200 employees became paper millionaires! Click on
these links to see some other things that Google can do, e.g. it is a calculator/converter
(e.g. 5+2*2 =
9, e.g. half
a cup in teaspoons = 24tsp), currency
converter (e.g. 1.40 euros per litre in USD per gallon
= $6.81), movie-finder
(reviews and local show-times), phonebook
(e.g. George
Bush Washington DC = 202-456-1111), find a word anywhere on a
website (e.g. site:www.santaclaradog.org Bailey),
etcetera
(e.g. pizza los
gatos, weather
san jose), etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
NEW Wikipedia
is a collaborative encyclopedia, it is often the best sources of
overview with depth information about every subject imaginable -- much
more powerful and much easier to access than the multi-volume paper books
that it replaces. The first time you go there, type "dog training"
into the SEARCH box on their home page, to get an idea what it can do. I did
it today and found a 10-page well-organized and readable article with many
hyperlinks (blue words) and reference links -- e.g., I clicked on the "assistance
dogs", "obedience
training" and "operant
conditioning" hyperlinks to get more information while I was
reading about dog training .
The in-depth information you will find
here is virtually always more up-to-date than books and magazines, and even
fresh newspaper, just off the press. In fact, during the November elections
here in San Jose, I looked up several of the candidates, finding many relevant and
up-to-date links. And for a current news perspective, try WikiNews.
Would YOU like to be an
editor? An absolutely unique feature of this encyclopedia, is
that the information can be edited by anyone, e.g. even by you,
and by clicking the
EditTab at the top of anything you look up, you can find out who
actually did the edits and when they were done! This is something you could never
do with traditional encyclopedic works like Brittania and Colliers and
... For more information on Wikipedia, type "wikipedia" into it's own SEARCH
box. Wikipedia, like google and TIVO, is something that you should know
about.
http://www3.youtube.com/watch?v=XE6QntZDim0
NEW You Tube is a bigger than huge
collection of videos made, mostly, by amateurs. If you've never looked
there, checkout this 1 minute video of Tyson, a bulldog who learned how
to skateboard. For a detailed view of history and make up, check out
this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Tube,
which is wikipedia's entry on You Tube.
www.refdesk.com
The Reference Desk contains hundreds of links, very well organized. You can find
current news, lookup items in a dictionary / thesaurus, perform a
reverse-lookup on a phone number, locate a news service (ABC, CNN, FBI,
...), determine the moon phase, locate your senator or representative,
locate facts, get advice, and link to LOTS of reference tools. Armed with
refdesk, wikipedia and google, you will be able to locate anything in cyberspace.
www.drudgereport.com
has current news frontpage (extremely up to date), like with CNN,
and WikiNews, information appears
within
minutes after it occurs. This particular site has direct links to about 90 newspapers and about 100
columnists, which is handy sometimes.
www.archive.org
This is a historical archive site. This site shows you what was on the internet in the past (in
contrast, google shows you what is on the Internet right now). The Internet
Archive is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural
artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, it provides free access to
researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public. Type a website
name into their "Wayback Machine" to see what that website looked
like, e.g. 5 years ago.
If you know a good link that we missed, click
here to send it to us.
MISCELLANEOUS
LINKS (some more, non-dog, sites)
check
out www.glasbergen.com
for toons by Randy.
http://uk.download.yahoo.com/ne/fu/attachments/bubblewrap.swf
STRESS RELIEF -- they have virtual bubble wrap for you to pop!
www.flightarrivals.com
this site is useful if you're flying, or meeting someone who is (use it before
you go to the airport). It lets you find the actual arrival/departure time status for any commercial
flight in the US. You can do this even when you don't know the flight
number or airline, because it lets you find all flights between any two
airports, or all flights arriving at a specified airport, etc. This
site is also useful when you are planning a trip.
www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages
front pages (from 200 of todays newspapers). You can select the MapView
tab to see a USA or world map, then you can hover your mouse over a city
or state or country and click to see todays front page!
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html
NASA pictures and links, it's a nice place to find wallpaper for your
monitor screen, if you like NASA kind of stuff. For example check out Sept
21 2006 Sharp Silhouette -- this picture blew me
away.
www.amagarea.com Price
Comparison site for magazines -- e.g. when I checked, Dog World was
available at under $10 (the publishers subscription price is almost $30).
www.stupid.com/stat/GFT.html
a place to find LOTS of "stupid" gifts
http://traffic.511.org/traffic_map.asp?drivingtimes=1
(live) local traffic maps, i.e. check the hot-spots at rush-hour,
or when you plan to drive up to the city (San Jose to San Francisco),
the information is continuously updated. You can click your starting and
ending points on their map and it will tell you what the expected driving
time is!
